Kate Wolfe-Jenson--images and words for the journey

The Genesis of Gems

In 2001, I participated in the Women's Art Institute and taught myself to make videos. In 2004, I received a Call for Entries for a juried show for graduates of that program. The show was to be called "Gems" and I immediately thought of how women (people, really) are like precious stones.

I researched the way gems are formed. Then I sent many women I know e-mail asking if they could correlate their own formation to the categories of ingredients, temperature, pressure, time and space. Their responses gave me inspiration for the images in the video. (Thank you!)

Instead of poetry, I wanted the sound/words to be reminiscent of the science films I watched in grade school.
